The Maritime Security programme is a pioneering course in Mozambique, Southern Africa and the African continent. Internationally, there are few programmes entirely dedicated to training professionals in this field in an integrated and holistic way. Maritime security topics have often appeared only within professional training. This programme emerges in a context where Mozambique faces multinational operations in offshore energy projects, signs of maritime terrorism and different illicit activities at sea. The programme proposed by UJC fits within the national Sea Policy and Strategy, focusing on priority areas such as protection of national interests at sea and the blue economy.

Access to courses at Joaquim Chissano University follows the legislation in force in Mozambique. Admission to the Master in Maritime Security is open to holders of bachelor degrees in International Relations, Maritime and Nautical Sciences, Naval Military Sciences, Police Sciences, History, Geography, Oceanography and related areas connected to activities at sea. Candidates without specific background may be required to attend a reorientation course.

The Master in Maritime Security was designed to be completed in two years, totaling four semesters. This period is distributed over three teaching semesters and one non-teaching semester reserved for research and preparation of the master dissertation, for a total of 120 credits.

The Maritime Security graduate is able to conceptualise the sea as a system and route of communication, identify risks and threats to maritime security, relate those threats to environmental and economic impacts, interact with state and non-state actors, plan maritime security mechanisms, analyse public strategies related to the sea, conduct scientific research and apply national and international norms governing maritime spaces.

Defense and security forces, maritime authorities, consultancy and research.
